There are so many different reasons, or excuses, a person could come up with to charter a sailboat. These sailboat charters can be "chartered" in two different ways. You can either pay for a full charter, in which you have a captain and a crew to serve your needs and desires. In this case, you can still maintain your navigator job and tell the crew where to go, or you can let them give you the tour on their own map. Or, you could go with the do-it-your-own way and charter the boat bareboat style, without the captain and crew. Youll need to know your way around the isles and how to maneuver the boat, but thats not too hard with a chartered sailboat. Finding an excuse to use a sailboat charter is not hard; the hard part is choosing where to go.
And on my opinion a wooden sailboat both feels more solid. The heavier wood lets the sailboat feel more solid in the water and thus a little bit safer. A sailboat is much easier to modify than a fiberglass boat. Just in case you need adjustments to your wooden sailboat, you need only lumber treated for boat use and little know-how. While with fiberglass, you are looking at either an impossible job or one that will require a lot of time and money if you are going to compare it with the wooden sailboat. And if you choose this kind of sailboat, make sure you have a complete inspection done of the entire boat, about and below. Always keep in mind that wood will require a lot of maintenance and must frequently painted or treated to keep intact.

If you are looking for a 20-28 foot sailboat to cruise around rivers, estuaries and a little offshore cruising, then fiberglass is fine. But if you want to go further, or you want your boat to be of a particular design, choose aluminum or steel. Many firms offer excellent designs for metal sailboats, and some offer sets of panels that you weld together - or have welded together - usually complete with instructions.
