After soaking, take the small brush and work off any old grease from the winch component. Dont forget to clean the winch gear ring on the inside of the drum. Now that youve removed the grease and grime, rinse the parts in hot water to remove the mineral spirits. If the spirits are left on, it breaks down the grease. Dry the parts with a clean rag or paper towel. Reassembly of Sailboat Winch As you put the gears back into place, take a close look at how the pawls are working. If they dont open and close smoothly, then the drum could spin backwards. If theres any question that the pawls are not working properly, it is much easier to replace them and the little springs. It is very important NOT to grease the pawls because grease causes them to stick. And if they stick, the gears wont engage. To lubricate your pawls, use any light oil that might be on hand; something like a 3 & 1 oil.
While most people tend to think of sailboats as all being the same, there are actually a variety of different types of sailboats in use throughout the world today. The basics still apply to them as far as sails and using the wind to power them through the water, but the features that make them unique offer a variety of different benefits to people, depending on their personal preferences. Many people wrongly assume that the size of the sailboat is the defining characteristic that separates it from other sailboats on the water. While different size sailboat will certainly have different features and provide its passengers with an array of different comforts, its not the size that really matters. The most common differences between sailboats have to do with the number and the position of masts that each ship has, though in recent years, that is no longer the only distinction.
There are other advantages, too. Fiberglass boats usually have separate keels that are bolted in place. The bolts work in the retaining holes in the hull, enlarging then slightly, and after a few years you are likely to get leaks. Worse still, if you press your sailboat really hard, the bolts can break,and you lose the keel. This happens quite often in racing, and can happen to cruising sailboats as well. The keel of a steel or aluminum boat is formed as part of the hull, so it cannot come off - and the ballast of lead or steel is encapsulated inside, where it cannot move. If you are looking for a 20-28 foot sailboat to cruise around rivers, estuaries and a little offshore cruising, then fiberglass is fine. But if you want to go further, or you want your boat to be of a particular design, choose aluminum or steel. Many firms offer excellent designs for metal sailboats, and some offer sets of panels that you weld together - or have welded together - usually complete with instructions.
Through more recent technology, the number of hulls that a sailboat has is also an important consideration when determining what distinguishes one ship from another. Multiple hull sailboats are also more commonly referred to as catamarans. These sailboats offer greater stability than its monhull (as they are now being referred to) counterparts due to the wide spread between the hulls. This creates strong leverage, which allows them to cruise as greater speeds than the monohulls. Many modern catamarans have surprisingly spacious areas below deck for any number of purposes, including storage, sleeping quarters, and basic shelter. There are also three-hulled sailboats known as trimarans and these are becoming very popular in recent years.
