Due to the fact so many wooden pirate ship models are crafted in the likeness of ships which are no longer made, a model is the one way many people will ever get to see what these boats looked like in real life. Libraries and museums helped to preserve blueprints of these ships, and as such modelers can create these vessels precisely as they were built in their life sized forms. Shipbuilders were more prone to give the building plans of the more popular ships to various vaults and museums around the world. Various types of modelers take pleasure in recreating notorious ships of old, but are also prone to enjoying the art of constructing brand new ones based on building plans and parts of many other ships.
Until the appearance of the Vikings long boats in Northern Europe (of which several ships have been found and now are displayed in museums in Norway and Denmark) the development of marine technology can be assessed only from sparse old records, frescoes, seals and other visual representations. Contemporary ship models survived only from the period after the discovery of America by Columbus. Many of them were votive ships in churches, which had been donated as expression of gratitude for successful travel or rescue from disaster. In the 17th century shipyards began to make accurate models before starting the actual construction of ships (the so-called Admiralty models when built for the English navy).
An Admiralty style model could also be a cross section of the hull. This is where all the planking is in place however the model would only represent part of the ship such as the bow, mid section or stern. The advantage of building an Admiralty ship model to the ship model builder is that you can add detail to better represent the purpose and era of the ship. Using the Bounty as an example, representation can be made for the galley, armament room, carpentry shop, hold, captains quarters etc. The Bountys botanical mission was to pick up bread fruit plants so some plants can be added as well as an area that would have been used for the studying of plants and animals discovered along its journey. Prior to starting the ship model the builder should not only study the ship that is being represented but also the era in which the ship was built. Ship building changed from century to century.
Wooden pirate ship models are a way in which modelers can express their creativity as well as their copious building skills. A gentle touch should be used when handling wooden pirate ship models. The pirate ship should be put in a position where handling such a delicate item is discouraged. On higher shelves, this model ship runs a significantly lower risk of being carelessly pushed and otherwise cracked or broken. Wooden pirate ship models are often purchased with a glass case which is a wonderful protection method. Wooden pirate ship models can be constructed with fewer parts, and with a hull made from sturdy plastic, this allows for greater handling. Many wooden pirate ship models are complicated in design and build. With so many tiny details and minuscule enhancements, this particular model is thought to be harder to craft. The interconnected thread of parts can be particularly difficult to fix if just one simple part goes missing or is damaged. Wood pirate ship models are glowing gems in a model enthusiasts collection.
